Event Review: Legends4Legends, Amsterdam, September 2017

The second annual Legends4Legends conference was organised by industry charity Alternatives 4 Children (A4C), of which Adamas Asset Management COO, Marc de Kloe, is a co-founder, in cooperation with local hedge fund allocator, Theta Capital, where partner and portfolio manager, Ruud Smets, was heavily involved. A4C’s project selection criteria include sustainability (in both economic and ecological senses); local anchoring; independence, to foster longer term self-sufficiency; and transparency. The 2017 event raised EUR 100,000. A4C’s projects have included funding schools and educational projects in Ghana, Tanzania, Kenya, India and the Netherlands. Theta Capital’s Euronext-listed multi-manager offering, the Legends Fund, and their bespoke managed account capabilities, were profiled in Issue 118 of The Hedge Fund Journal.

Here we highlight views from those that spoke on the record.

50 Leading Women In Hedge Funds 2017

More than 200 guests attended a reception hosted by The Hedge Fund Journal at The Pierre Hotel in New York on 31 May 2017, to celebrate the publication of the 2017 edition of the 50 Leading Women in Hedge Funds report. Most of the US-based women featured in the 2017 report were at the reception along with their guests. A parallel event held in London, on 6 June 2017, took the form of a dinner for 130 guests at the Avenue in St. James’s Street. Most of the European-based women featured in the 2017 report were at the dinner along with their guests.

“This is the 5th edition of this biannual report and interest in the report continues to grow. We hold events in New York and London to accompany the launch of the report and both events – New York on 31 May and London on 6 June – were sell-outs. We are very grateful to EY who have sponsored the last four reports,” said Rod Sparks, publisher of The Hedge Fund Journal.

The report’s author and Contributing Editor of The Hedge Fund Journal, Hamlin Lovell, spoke about the methodology behind the compilation of the 2017 report and summarised the entries. “Some forty-five women in this report have not appeared in previous reports, published in 2015, 2013, 2011 and 2010. No less than twenty-one women in this report are portfolio managers of hedge funds. Eight women work in sales, investor relations or marketing. Seven are practising lawyers. Four are COOs. Three work for prime brokers. Two are risk managers, two are allocators, one is a finance director, one a regulatory consultant and one a researcher. Clearly women have attained the highest echelons right across the hedge fund industry,” he said.

Introduction
Enhancing portfolio returns with uncorrelated assets

Yves Guntern – Alternative Investments Business Head, UBP

Why don’t we start by looking at flows and demands? With reference to Europe, we have seen over the past 12 months a €51 billion inflow into alternative strategies. European investors generally speaking are reducing the risk in their portfolios and allocating to more conservative strategies. It’s a very similar picture in Asia; I was there last week and we see that the trend in clients’ portfolios is absolutely the same, in the same direction.

We’ve all read the press during the summer saying that there are massive outflows from cash funds but that doesn’t really correspond to what we’re seeing here. The reason for this is that the profile of investors in the US is different than what we have in Europe and in Asia, in the sense that in the US after the global financial crisis, institutional investors had very quickly allocated to hedge funds in 2009/2010 and since then they’ve had a pretty sizeable exposure to alternative strategies, including actual of course.

SALT Las Vegas 2016 Review

There were thousands of registered delegates at SkyBridge Alternatives (SALT) Conference in Las Vegas and SkyBridge Capital founder Anthony Scaramucci estimates that $2.5 to $3 trillion of allocator capital could have been present at the 8th annual event hosted by the global investment firm. SALT panellists include politicians, celebrities, and sportspeople, and leisure activities at the event included spa treatments, cycling, swimming, jogging to the Hoover Dam, and live bands such as The Killers. Philanthropy is also an aspect of SALT: a number of speakers, including billionaires David Rubenstein of Carlyle and Leon Cooperman of Omega, have signed the ‘Giving Pledge’ committing them to bequeath the majority of their wealth to charity. The Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation, which supports the surviving spouses and families of soldiers who passed away on active duty, was one charity with a stand at SALT. But in this review we focus on a selection of views from hedge fund manager panels, as well as some service providers and some one-on-one meetings with managers at the event. Many of the panellists, speakers and moderators have been selected for The Hedge Fund Journal’s biennial surveys: ‘Tomorrows Titans’, and ‘50 Leading Women In Hedge Funds’, both of which are sponsored by EY. Many panellists have also been interviewed and profiled by THFJ.
