Atlantis Asian Fund to add Sterling & Euro share classes

26 Apr 2011
Atlantis Investment Management has announced it will add Sterling and Euro share classes to the Atlantis Asian Fund, to meet demand from discretionary managers in the UK and Europe who are looking for boutique fund managers offering niche expertise in the Asia ex-Japan space.

The fund typically holds a concentrated portfolio of 40-60 undervalued growth companies with a catalyst for undiscounted change that will lead to the potential for significant earnings improvement. It appeals to those investors looking for a more focused and less benchmark constrained exposure to Asia. Atlantis investment teams are based on the ground in Asia with excellent access to investee company management teams.

Joseph Wat is the Fund Adviser and has refocused the investment objective of the fund, since taking over its management in April 2009. Over these two years his strategy has been very successful and the Fund has outperformed the MSCI Far East ex-Japan benchmark by 52% and is ranked 9th out of 191 funds in its Lipper peer universe as of 31 March 2011.

The fund currently has a bias towards under-appreciated sectors such as ports, transportation and alternative energy. Wat is particularly attracted to the solar sector as it has underperformed in recent years as a result of over-supply. However, Wat expects performance to improve in the rest of 2011 due to rising oil prices, increased demand from countries such as China and the US and the recent events in Japan which have caused many countries to re-evaluate their nuclear strategies.

Wat is also bullish on the investment potential of Asian healthcare, as some companies start to gain approvals on their products across Asia, Europe and the US.

An offer period for the new Sterling and Euro share classes will open today (26th April) and will close on 25th May, before launch on 26th May. The launch prices will be GBP 10.00 / EUR 10.00 respectively.

Commenting on the opening of the offer period, Joseph Wat said: “There are some unique structural opportunities playing out in Asian economies which are influencing decisions as to the individual companies we invest in. The new share class will enable us to expand our distribution reach to investors looking to build positions in sectors with the greatest growth potential.”

Roger Mortimer, Business Development Manager, commented: “With two years outperformance on the Atlantis Asian Fund, Joseph has demonstrated his talent for identifying themes and interesting, undervalued companies ahead of the market. We feel the time is right, given the growth rates available in Asia, to list the fund on UK and European platforms and are confident in Joseph's ability to continually unearth compelling opportunities across the market cap spectrum.”
