HSBC has announced the appointment of John Crompton as Global Head of Equity Capital Markets. Starting in April 2010, Crompton will be based in London and will report to Kevin Adeson, Head of Global Capital Financing.
Crompton joins from UK Financial Investments Limited, the company set up to manage the UK government's investments in financial institutions. As Head of Market Investments, he had overall responsibility for UKFI's engagement with Lloyds and RBS through UKFI's first year of operation and had involvement with all the major negotiations and capital markets transactions with both banks during 2009. As a member of the senior management team, he also played an important role in setting up UKFI in November 2008.
Crompton joined UKFI from Merrill Lynch where he was Managing Director and Head of Equity Capital Markets, EMEA. Prior to this his roles since 1986 included Co-Head of European Equity Capital Markets, Head of Non-Japan Asia Equity Capital Markets, and various positions within US Equity Capital Markets. Crompton also spent nearly two years on secondment to Her Majesty's Treasury in the UK as its senior corporate finance adviser between 2005 and 2007. He also chaired the European Primary Financial Markets division of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association before joining UKFI.
Following Crompton’s appointment, Russell Julius becomes Chairman of the ECM business globally. In this new role he will continue to focus on ECM origination, especially in Asia, and also seek to expand and deepen HSBC’s ECM franchise in both developed and emerging markets. He continues to report to Kevin Adeson.
