Union Bancaire Privée announced that it has appointed Larry Morgenthal as CEO of UBP Asset Management, the Group’s US business. He also assumes the role of Chief Investment Officer of Alternatives. Morgenthal will spearhead the renewed activity in the company’s fund of hedge funds platform, following the reinforcement of its investment and risk management teams since 2009. Morgenthal has 18 years of direct involvement in alternative investing and business development, having started his career managing the assets for two large US pension funds, NCR Corporation and Asea Brown Boveri. He has held senior positions in Bank of America’s Alternative Investment Group, where he headed the overall business and chaired the investment committee, as well as at Opus Capital Group, where he was managing partner, and Ivy Asset Management (BNY Mellon), where he held the roles of COO and later CEO.

Jupiter Asset Management has announced that Alastair Gunn and Rhys Petheram have been promoted to become co-managers of the Jupiter Distribution Fund alongside Anthony Nutt and John Hamilton. Gunn and Petheram have each worked as part of Jupiter’s fund management team for more than three years. Gunn joined Jupiter in 2007 to work alongside Head of UK Equities Anthony Nutt. He joined the Company from Arbuthnot Securities where he had been director of Equity Research since 2003. Before that he worked as a Managing Director of Equity Research for Bear Stearns International. Petheram has worked alongside John Hamilton, Head of Fixed Interest, since 2006. Prior to joining Jupiter, he was a Credit Analyst at Moody’s and before that was an Investor Services Analyst at Towers Perrin Australia. Jupiter has also announced the appointment of Kathryn Langridge as an emerging markets fund manager. Langridge, who has more than 20 years’ experience, will join Jupiter’s emerging markets desk in September. Jupiter intends to launch a global emerging markets fund for Langridge to manage. Langridge will join Jupiter from Lloyd George Asset Management, where she has been managing long only emerging market equity investment portfolios since 2007. Before that, she worked for 17 years at Invesco Perpetual with roles including Head of Asian Investments and Head of International Equity Products.

RBC Capital Markets has announced that it has added to its Global Financial Institutions group with four senior hires in London. Martin Dunn has joined RBC Capital Markets as a Managing Director, Global Financial Institutions group, with a focus on developing the firm’s global asset manager relationships. Dunn joins RBC Capital Markets from RBS, where he held a similar position for the last five years. He previously held positions at UBS and Tokai Bank Europe. Chris Rogers has joined RBC Capital Markets as a Managing Director, Global Financial Institutions group, with a focus on UK and Irish banks. With over 20 years financial institutions’ market experience, Rogers joins RBC Capital Markets from BNP Paribas. Prior to this he was a Managing Director at ABN AMRO, where he spent ten years, and UBS. Nicole Humphries has joined RBC Capital Markets’ Global Financial Institutions group as a Managing Director, with a focus on European banks. Humphries joins RBC Capital Markets from Barclays Wealth, where she was a Relationship Manager for its Major Strategic Wealth Management Partnership. Prior to this, Humphries was at Barclays Capital focusing on DCM coverage for UK Financial Institutions. Laurence Sherlock has joined RBC Capital Markets with over 30 years’ experience, as a Director in Correspondent Banking. Sherlock was previously at Standard Chartered, where he was Head of Business Development in Europe.

The Board of Directors of Newedge, composed of directors representing Crédit Agricole CIB and Société Générale, has announced the following appointments: Duncan Goldie-Morrison as a full time, independent Chairman of the Board. Duncan was chairman of Newedge Board since May 2009 representing Crédit Agricole CIB, and has now resigned his position of Senior Advisor to Patrick Valroff, CEO of Crédit Agricole CIB. This appointment ends the rotation of Newedge’s chairmanship between the two shareholders. Jacques Ripoll, Head of Global Investment Management and Services at Société Générale Group and Jérôme Grivet, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Crédit Agricole CIB as Vice Chairmen of the board. Both Ripoll and Grivet were respectively Newedge board members since September 2009 and January 2008 (creation of Newedge). Nicolas Breteau as Chief Executive Officer of Newedge, succeeding Patrice Blanc, who has decided to leave the firm for personal reasons.

AHL has appointed Kevin Chuah as a Portfolio Manager. In his new role, Kevin reports to Harry Skaliotis who heads up AHL’s Client Portfolio Management team and is responsible for working with clients to enhance their knowledge of AHL’s trading strategies, in addition to working closely with the manager’s 75-strong research team. Chuah joins Man from Aspect Capital where he was a Product Manager. Prior to this, Chuah worked as a Portfolio Manager within the fund of hedge funds team at Colonial First State Global Asset Management, where he was based in Sydney before moving to London.

Dechert has announced that James Waddington has joined the firm in London as a partner. Prior to joining Dechert, Waddington was a partner at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe. He advises commercial and investment banks and private equity and hedge fund clients in connection with finance and derivative transactions, credit default swaps, lending and borrowing arrangements, debt and equity offerings, insolvency and restructuring matters as well as fund formation and fund investments. He has practiced law in Paris, London and New York since 1985 and has previously worked as an investment banker at Bankers Trust Company (now Deutsche Bank).

Galtere has announced the launch of a new European arm - Galtere (Switzerland) AG. The firm has appointed Werner Schuenemann to manage the new operation, which is based in Zug, Switzerland. Additionally, Schuenemann has assumed the newly created role of international head of business development and investor relations. His focus will be on managing and developing the firm’s institutional investor base in Europe, the US, Middle East and Asia. Galtere’s investment management, trading and research functions will continue to be run out of New York. Schuenemann has over 25 years of investment and financial services industry experience, having held global head of sales and distribution roles at a variety of alternative investment firms, most recently Swiss Alpha and Pamplona Capital. Schuenemann has also had senior sales and Directorial positions at JP Morgan (formerly Flemings), Morgan Stanley and UBS.

Oakley Alternative Investment Management is expanding its London operations with the appointment of Fabio Cortes as Head of Macro at the company’s flagship fund of hedge funds, Oakley Absolute Return. Cortes will work alongside Nick Hannan, CIO, and Teun Johnston, Head of Investments, to further develop the scope of the OAIM investment function and business. Prior to joining Oakley, Cortes was a Managing Director of Amundi AI SAS with a focus on analysing European and Asian macro, trading and fixed income strategies as well as advising a macro and systematic trading fund of hedge funds. Cortes began his career at the Bank of England in 2000 as a research analyst, moving in 2003 to the bank’s foreign exchange division as an asset swap dealer and fixed-income analyst. In 2004 he joined the newly-created analysis team within the bank’s foreign exchange division as a senior analyst.

RAB Capital has announced the appointment of David Seex as the Chief Executive Officer of RAB Capital (Asia). Seex will develop the company’s activities in Asia, widening RAB’s contact base in the region, and will oversee the company’s Hong Kong Office. Seex previously worked as a Managing Director at Citigroup, where he was a founding member of Citigroup Alternative Investments management team and from 2001 acted as Head of CAI in Asia. He joined Citigroup in 1998 after spending three years at United Distillers, part of Diageo plc, also based in Asia.
State Street Global Advisors has announced the appointments of Raymond Haines as Head of UK Liability Driven Investing and Christopher J. Goolgasian, CFA, CPA, CAIA, who joined SSgA as a senior portfolio manager in the Multi-Asset-Class Solutions group in Boston. The company also announced the transition of Gregory Taieb from its Montreal office to support the UK MACS team in London. Haines has more than 30 years of financial industry experience and brings a technical investment background from his previous positions at LV= Asset Management where he was most recently chief investment officer and at ABN AMRO Bank NV, where he led the UK Pension Advisory team. He has also previously served as CIO at Hill Samuel Asset Management and as a pension fund Trustee, advising public sector funds. At SSgA, he will be responsible for managing LDI solutions for the UK market, and reports to Joseph Moody, global head of Liability Driven Investing. Joining Haines is Taieb, a MACS portfolio manager in Montreal who will relocate to London to support the company’s continued growth in that market. Taieb, who will be responsible for portfolio management, research and product development for UK clients, has served on the MACS team since 2003 and has previously worked in SSgA’s Paris office managing balanced, LDI and overlay portfolios. Vincent-Philippe Sicotte will succeed Gregory Taieb as portfolio manager in Montreal. Boston-based Goolgasian will be responsible for developing and implementing multi-asset-class solutions for defined benefit, defined contribution, and endowment and foundation clients. He joins State Street from Pyramis Global Advisors, where he was an institutional portfolio manager.

RWC Partners has announced that Peter Allwright and Stuart Frost will join to manage absolute return and currency funds. Allwright and Frost are lead managers on the Threadneedle Absolute Return Bond portfolios which have grown to more than $3 billion since launch over four years ago. They are co-managers of the Threadneedle Absolute Return Bond Fund and the Threadneedle Target Return Fund. On joining, Allwright and Frost will take over the management of the RWC Strategic Reserve Fund and will be launching funds with a more flexible approach to risk later this year. Allwright joined Threadneedle in 2005 as a global bond fund manager and is responsible for absolute return and high alpha strategies. In addition, he manages the Threadneedle European Bond and Global Bond Funds. Prior to joining Threadneedle, he was a senior portfolio manager at Gartmore and Royal London Asset Management. Frost joined the Threadneedle fixed income team in 2007 and is an experienced currency and fixed income trader, having held a number of senior positions at NatWest Markets for more than 20 years.

Armstrong Investment Managers has hired James de Bunsen to join their investment team with a focus on investment selection and manager due diligence. It is intended de Bunsen will become a partner of AIM and has joined from Insight Investment, where he was an analyst in their multi-asset group. Armstrong has also announced the appointment of Brendan Gallagher to its Business Development Team. Gallagher has joined from Insight Investment, where he worked in their European Business development team.

Hermes Fund Managers has announced the appointment of Mark Rimmer as a product specialist in Government and Inflation-linked Bonds. Backed by his extensive experience in business development, Rimmer will drive third party institutional business for the Hermes Global Government Bonds boutique. Rimmer joins Hermes from Charles Stanley’s Fixed Income sales team, where he was responsible for providing a brokering service to institutional fixed income and private client fund managers. Prior to this, he spent seven years at BlackRock as a Fixed Income product specialist, where a key aspect of his work was business development. Rimmer previously spent over ten years as a Fixed Income fund manager at Gartmore, AON and Gulf International.

Deutsche Bank has hired Anita Nemes as Global Head of Capital Introduction, based in London. She will spearhead the ongoing effort to provide Deutsche Bank’s hedge fund clients with access to institutional sources of capital. Nemes will join the bank in October from Merrill Lynch where she was Global Head of Capital Introduction.

City Asset Management has announced that Mark Russell-Stracey, formerly Head of UK Equities at Arbuthnot Latham, has joined the company as a senior portfolio manager. A member of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment and with over 20 years experience, Russell-Stracey, has worked in a number of roles within the financial sector, including insurance companies, stockbroking and has spent the last 12 years at Arbuthnot Latham. He specialises in the day to day management of private client, pension and charitable portfolios as well as advising trustees on formulating investment policy and meeting their regulatory obligations. In addition to his new role as a senior portfolio manager, Russel-Stracey will also join CAM’s Tactical Asset Allocation Committee.

ING’s Global Securities Finance team has hired Colin Bugler to head its new Synthetic Portfolio Solutions team, reporting to Richard Pryce, Head of Equity Lending & Repo. Bugler’s remit will be to enhance ING’s position as a provider of securities financing products to hedge funds, as well as expanding the range of products offered. Bugler has extensive prime brokerage experience, most recently as Head of Global Prime Brokerage and Equity Finance at RBC Capital Markets. Prior to RBC, he held a similar position at Scotia Capital and previously spent eleven years in London with Merrill Lynch as Head of International Prime Brokerage & Securities Lending and with HSBC as Head of CFD Trading.

Baring Asset Management has announced the appointment of Andrew Benton to the role of Head of UK & International Institutional Sales and Business Development. Benton is responsible for all London-based institutional sales, in particular, leading and developing the UK institutional sales activities. Benton joins Barings from Schroders, where he was Head of UK Institutional Sales since in 2005. He was responsible for rebuilding Schroders’ institutional profile within the UK and significantly growing the assets in that business. Previously, he was Head of Global Consultant Relationships at RCM Ltd UK. Barings has also announced the appointment of Naoki Toyoda to the role of Head of Mutual Fund Sales and Client Service in Japan to support the growth of its Toshin Fund range in the region. Toyoda will focus on increasing sales by developing new distribution relationships, growing business with its existing network of distributions partners and ensuring the Japanese mutual fund product range is optimally aligned to client needs and demands. Toyoda joins from Aberdeen Asset Management’s Japanese operations where he was Senior Manager of Business Development.

The Board of Directors of Alpha Strategic has announced the appointment of Florence Lombard as a Non-executive Director. Lombard was head of the Alternative Investment Management Association in the United Kingdom, from 1993 until the end of 2008. Following the advent of the global financial crisis, she agreed to stay on as Executive Director focusing on the relationship with governments and policy makers internationally. In April 2010 she was appointed a Non-executive Director of AIMA. Lombard is also a founder member and Chair of the Board of Directors of the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst Association and a Director of the Institute for Global Asset and Risk Management.

GAM has announced the appointment of Portfolio Manager, Rory MacEwen. MacEwen will work alongside existing portfolio directors on managing offshore fiduciary and international accounts. He joins GAM from Barclays Wealth where he was Assistant Vice President and co-managed £150 million of assets for around 50 high net worth clients.

Maples Finance has announced two senior level additions to its business development team. Kim Waldman has been appointed as Director of Business Development Americas, based in New York. Adam Jones joins as Senior Vice President Business Development, Europe, based in London. Waldman and Jones will be responsible for expanding the presence and client base of Maples Finance in the Americas and Europe respectively. Waldman joins Maples Finance from BNP Paribas where she was responsible for launching and expanding their institutional fund administration business in North America. Previously, Waldman has held business development, marketing and sales positions at UBS Global Asset Management and BNY Alternative Investment Services. Jones was previously Director, Global Equity Finance, EMEA for Scotia Capital in London. In that role he was responsible for sales and marketing of prime brokerage services. Prior to Scotia Capital, Jones held positions at Dow Jones, Factiva and Reuters.

Deutsche Bank’s Supervisory Board has approved the request of Michael Cohrs, Co-Head of the Corporate and Investment Bank and Head of Global Banking, to retire from the Management Board and the bank at the end of September 2010. Cohrs will maintain close ties to Deutsche Bank as a member of its European Advisory Board, which he will join on 1 October 2010. His responsibilities as Head of Global Banking will be assumed by Anshu Jain, Head of Global Markets and Cohrs’ longtime Co-Head of the Corporate and Investment Bank. Jain will be the sole head of the Corporate and Investment Bank going forward.

International Asset Management has announced the appointment of Nan Mead as Vice President of Client Development. Based in IAM’s New York office, Nan will report to Head of Client Development and Marketing, Andrew Cade. Nan has extensive experience in marketing, sales and investor relations having previously worked at Ivy and Credit Suisse in similar marketing focused positions

RBC Wealth Management has announced the hire of Tracy Maeter as Head of Investments, British Isles. Maeter will be based in London and will be responsible for oversight of RBC Wealth Management’s discretionary and advisory investments platforms in the British Isles. Maeter joins RBC from HSBC in London, where she was Head of Investors. During her 5-year tenure there, she also held the positions of Team Head, Sales Management and Team Head, High Net Worth. Maeter has also held positions at JP Morgan and a number of consulting firms.

Lyxor has announced the appointment of Isela Rosales. Rosales, member of the 100 Women in Hedge Funds, had been New York regional director of sales and client service for Coast Asset Management. Rosales will be working as part of its US client services team, helping to develop its relationships with US-based investment consultants and institutions. She will continue to be based in the New York area and report in to Lionel Erdely, CEO of Lyxor’s US operations. Lyxor said Rosales will be focusing on day-to-day investor relations activities for its managed accounts platform as well as its range of advisory products.

KB Associates has announced the opening of its New York office. The new office, to be headed by John Pagano, will advise US-based managers wishing to establish funds to target European investors. This will include providing advisory and project management support both to managers establishing fund vehicles in Europe and also to those re-domiciling existing offshore funds into Europe. Pagano, who joins from Skandia Securities, has many years experience in the offshore funds environment and brings particular expertise in the structuring and compliance issues relating to the establishment and ongoing operation of UCITS funds.

Signia Wealth has announced the appointment of Matthew Stemp as an Executive Director in the Investment Management division, and Greg Malone as a Director in the Private Banking Team. Stemp has 26 years’ industry experience and joins having worked for 17 years at UBS Global Asset Management, where he was a senior portfolio manager in the Phillips & Drew Fund Management Business and then Regional Chief Investment Officer before being promoted to Head of UK. Previous to his tenure at UBS Global Asset Management he spent seven years at Fidelity having started his career at Lazard Investors. Malone joins Signia Wealth as a Director from Arbuthnot Latham Private Bank where he was responsible for managing a portfolio of high net worth clients.

Dechert has announced that it plans to open an office in Dublin, which will focus on advising investment funds, their investment managers and other fund service providers. Declan O’Sullivan, who previously led the alternative investment practice at Irish firm William Fry has joined Dechert in Dublin to lead the practice. Three further financial services lawyers have been hired in Dublin as associates and a full recruitment process is under way. O’Sullivan’s work involves advising domestic and international clients in the establishment and authorisation of all types of investment funds including UCITS, hedge funds, property funds and private equity fund products.

BNP Paribas Investment Partners has announced that Martin Fridson is joining BNP Paribas Asset Management, as Global Credit Strategist within its Global Credit Investment team. Previously, Fridson was the CEO of Fridson Investment Advisors, which was a US registered investment advisory firm. As head of the Strategy Unit within Global Credit, Fridson will contribute to building the team’s research effort and will frame macro views for the Global Credit team’s mandates.

Man has added to its UK Institutional sales team with the appointment of Tim Fitch as a Senior Relationship Manager. In his new role, Fitch reports to Paul Dackombe, Head of Institutional Clients UK and is responsible for developing relationships with UK Institutions including family offices, fund of hedge funds, insurance companies and pension and endowment funds. Fitch joins from AXA Investment Managers where he was Director of Single Strategy Hedge Fund Sales. Prior to AXA, Fitch was Senior Marketer in Europe at KBC Alternative Investment Management and Marketing Director at GMP Asset Management, a European event driven single manager.

Majedie Asset Management has announced that it has appointed Simon Todd and Michael Nickson, both formerly of Odey Asset Management, to establish a new Global Equity business. Todd joins from Odey Asset Management, where he co-managed the Odey Allegra Global Fund. Todd previously managed Global and European equity portfolios at MFS Investment Management, where he worked from 2000 to 2009, having started his fund management career at Philips & Drew. Nickson also joins from Odey Asset Management, where he co-managed the Odey Allegra Global Fund. Previously he worked on European portfolios at MFS Investment Management and trained with Goldman Sachs in London.

AXA Investment Managers has announced the appointment of Nick Hayes as a Portfolio Manager in AXA Fixed Income. Hayes has taken over responsibility for the AXA Sterling Strategic Bond Fund and will contribute to the global credit process. Previously, he was at New Star / Henderson New Star where he had been a senior Fund Manager in the New Star Fixed Interest team since 2003. Prior to joining New Star in May 2002, Hayes worked at WPP Group.

Insparo Asset Management has announced the appointment of Emma Robinson as Investor Relations Manager. Robinson will support Jamie Allsopp in marketing the Africa and Middle East Fund to a range of hedge fund and emerging market investors in Europe, Middle East and the US. Robinson will also take on responsibility for the firm’s investor communications and client liaison. Before joining Insparo, Robinson garnered a strong insight in the hedge fund industry with two years at Man Investments as an institutional sales assistant. In this role, Emma gained experience of investor relations across the board, and at the time of her leaving, she had taken on responsibility for Man’s UK consultant relationship management.
